Inauguration of New W3C India Office Workspace

- New W3C India Office Workspace was inaugurated by Hon’ble MoS Shri. Sachin Pilot on 15 September, 2011.
- Dr. Somnath Chandra, Deputy Country Manager, W3C India, welcomed the dignitaries and audience.

- Shri. Sachin Pilot spoke in praise of work done by W3C India office. He said “This will not only facilitate wider access of web by the people of this country but will also equip them to provide locally relevant content on the internet. Such initiatives will play a great role in reducing poverty, improving health care, education, spreading good governance and addressing all local challenges in the global context.” On inauguration of W3C India Office workspace he showed his positive hopes and said “establishment and launching of W3C India Office Space is an important milestone. This will enable regular interaction with industry, academia, industry associations for developing and evolving best practices, guidelines and National recommendations, which will facilitate multilingual internet in India.” He wished this initiative all success.

- Shri. R. Chandrashekhar began his speech with congratulating W3C India Office for having a new Workspace. He said “W3C promotes wide spectrum of guidelines and best practices covering the entire ambit of issues ranging from content, security and access mechanism.” He also said that efforts of TDIL Programme and W3C India are noteworthy.

- Shri. N. Ravi Shanker spoke about importance of W3C India. He opined that “India is a linguistically diverse nation having 22 constitutionally recognized languages and 11 complex scripts, so implementation of W3C standards for seamless web across devices and platforms in Indian Languages makes it a huge and challenging task. And I hope establishment of new W3C India office workspace will help in promotion, proliferation and adoption of W3C standards and its implementation according to local languages and culture.” And wish this initiative all success.

- Mr. J. Alan Bird expressed his overwhelming views on collaboration with W3C India Office. He also gave a brief introduction about W3C in which he said “World Wide Web (W3C) is an international Standards Body that develops standards/best practices/recommendations to ensure seamless web access to all. Its headquarter is in Massachusetts Institute of technology, USA. Its aim is Web for everyone and Web for everything.” And mentioning about new W3C India Office Workspace he said “the establishment of new W3C office workspace gives it a permanent entity and would play more active and crucial role in propagation of W3C standards among ICT industry and users and will make India a knowledge based society.”

- She spoke about W3C and its mission in the content of the web concept evolved by Tim Berners Lee for document sharing which led to setting up of World Wide Web Consortium by him. She highlighted the mission of W3C, i.e. lead the Web to its full potential by developing protocols and guidelines that ensure the long-term growth of the Web. She informed that W3C India Office has been functional at Deptt. Of Information Technology, Govt. of India under the aegis of Technology Development for Indian Languages programme since May, 2011. Long term goals of W3C India Office are to enable all W3C standards with 22 scheduled Indian Languages so that we can achieve seamless web for every Indian. W3C India Office is engaged with diverse National Regulatory Standard Bodies and Industry association like TRAI, BIS, NASSCOM, MAIT and stakeholders viz. Mobile associations since 2006 as organizations located all over the world and involved in many different fields are joining W3C to participate in a vendor-neutral forum for the creation of Web standards. W3C members and full-time staff of technical experts and W3C offices across the globe have earned W3C international recognition for its contributions to the Web. Offices help W3C in education, outreach and adoption of standards. She mentioned that although W3C standards are applicable across the globe yet lot of efforts are required to customize some of these standards to local languages, culture and conventions.
